In his previous leadership position with the Council, John worked closely with key staff on Capitol Hill, at the Internal Revenue Service and at the Department of Treasury. He became widely known in the charitable community for his experience and assistance to foundations and donors.

John earned his law degree from the University of California at Berkeley (Boalt Hall) in 1969 and his A.B. degree in honors from Princeton (1966). He is the author of several books in the nonprofit field, including First Steps in Starting a Foundation, Beyond Our Borders: Making Grants Outside the U.S., Family Foundations and the Law, and Supporting Organizations and How They Work. He has consulted with governments and foundations worldwide, including in China, Australia, Russia, and Eastern Europe. John has government experience both locally and nationally, having served in State government as deputy director of the California Department of Aging and for five years on Capitol Hill as chief counsel to the Senate Special Committee on Aging. He is also a long-term member of the Exempt Organizations Committee of the American Bar Association’s Section on Taxation and currently serves on the board of BBB Wise Giving Alliance.

The PricewaterhouseCoopers Exempt Organizations Tax Services team serves a wide range of domestic and international tax-exempt organizations -- including colleges and universities, health care entities, foundations, social welfare organizations, trade and professional associations, membership organizations, pension funds, museums and other cultural entities, religious organizations, and donor-advised funds -- as well as corporate and individual donors to charities. Located in Washington, DC and other cities, members of the group include individuals with many years' experience representing large foundations and other charities, working at the IRS, Treasury, and the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation, and serving on the boards of nonprofit organizations.
