Steven C. Darr, CPA, CMA, is a partner in the Washington, DC office of Calibre CPA Group. He has been in public accounting since 1982.
Steve has dedicated his career to working exclusively with associations and not-for-profit organizations, and is a recognized expert in auditing, accounting, and tax issues affecting tax exempt entities. His experience includes working with charitable organizations, trade and professional societies, labor unions, pension funds, real estate projects, and a variety of other tax exempt organizations. His experience also includes working with complex exempt organizations who use taxable subsidiaries, building corporations, and other multi-entity arrangements.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Virginia, Steve’s professional accomplishments include earning the top score in Maryland on the CPA exam, and the top score in the country on the CMA exam.
He has trained well over 1,000 other CPAs in the nuances and intricacies of tax exempt accounting and reporting standards, including SFAS No. 116, “Accounting for Contributions Received and Contributions Made,” SFAS No. 117, “Financial Statements of Not-for-Profit Organizations,” and SFAS No. 124, “Accounting for Certain Investments Held by Not-for-Profit Organizations.” He has authored several professional continuing education courses on these subjects, and has taught related seminars across the country for the AICPA, ASAE, and many state CPA societies and not-for-profit trade groups. Steve was honored by the AICPA for his teaching skills when it named him one of the Institute’s Outstanding Instructors for 1998. Additionally, he served for four years as the subject matter expert for all not-for-profit questions appearing on the Uniform CPA Exam.
In addition to serving in a variety of volunteer governing board positions for local not-for-profit organizations, Steve served for three years as the Secretary-Treasurer of a national membership organization having 135,000 members, and is currently a member of the Board of Governors of the Greater Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Audit Committee of the American Anthropological Association.
Professional memberships include the American Institute and Greater Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants, ASAE & the Center for Association Leadership, the Finance and Administration Roundtable, the Institute of Management Accountants, and the New York Society of Association Executives.
